Nico O’Reilly has spoken about the immense pride he and his family feel following his first senior international call-up for England.

The defender was called into Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions squad as a replacement for the injured Reece James for fixtures against Wales on Thursday and Latvia next Tuesday.

The 20-year-old has featured for the Citizens on six occasions in the Premier League this season, having made four starts.

O’Reilly started last season’s Community Shield penalty shoot-out victory over Manchester United at Wembley. Originally a central midfielder, he became a key option at left-back under Pep Guardiola, making 21 appearances in his breakthrough season.

“I got a call from Thomas after the game and he let me know. First, I got a text – I had to double check it – when I was on the team bus on the way back from the game,” O’Reilly said to Manchester City’s website.

“He just said that he’d love to have me in the squad, he’s been watching for quite a while, he sees I’m doing well and he’s happy I’m playing a lot of games. I was just buzzing.

“They said they were so proud of me, to soak it all in, enjoy every moment and be myself.”

O’Reilly joined City’s Academy at age eight, and has since gone on to make 28 senior appearances in all competitions.

The young defender had recently signed a new long-term contract with City until 2030, and now he has added international recognition with England to his achievements.

“Everything has happened so fast but I’m enjoying every single minute of it. It’s a crazy feeling. I’m so happy to be here. It’s definitely one of the biggest moments in my career and in my life being here,” O’Reilly added.

“I wasn’t expecting it. It’s always been a goal and a dream of mine to be in the senior squad and now it’s happened. The seniors is the main goal and where everyone wants to be. It’s a surreal feeling.”
