PSV 6-2 Napoli: Hosts produce masterclass in epic comeback win

PSV fought back from behind to seal an epic 6-2 Champions League victory over Napoli at Philips Stadion on Tuesday.

After Scott McTominay’s header put the visitors ahead just after the half-hour mark, the Dutch side roared back in style, scoring six times over the following hour to claim a historic win.

Ismael Saibari thought he had given PSV the lead 18 minutes in but saw his effort ruled out for offside before Napoli capitalised on their hosts’ profligacy as McTominay broke the deadlock, nodding home in space off Leonardo Spinazzola’s pinpoint cross.

But the hosts hit back almost immediately, drawing level in the 35th minute when Ivan Perisic’s cross was awkwardly turned into his own net by Alessandro Buongiorno.

Just three minutes later, Saibari completed the turnaround, racing through one-on-one with Vanja Milinkovic-Savić before slotting calmly into the bottom corner.

PSV increased their advantage nine minutes into the second half, courtesy of Dennis Man, who thumped home from inside the box after a low cross from Mauro Junior.

Napoli then saw a frustrating evening slip completely out of control as Lorenzo Lucca was shown a straight red card 76 minutes in for abusive language and dissent, opening the doors for PSV to run riot.

And the hosts duly obliged as Man added a fourth with a thumping 20-yard-strike before McTominay pulled one back for Napoli with a late consolation header.

However, substitutes Ricardo Pepi and Couhaib Driouech combined brilliantly in the closing stages – Pepi tapping in from Driouech’s pass before returning the favour in stoppage time – to cap off a remarkable six-goal display.

PSV move up to 11th in the table, level on four points with Tottenham, while Napoli suffer their second defeat, placing them 22nd.

Data Debrief: PSV break historic record

PSV’s six-goal masterclass saw them set a new record in Dutch football history.

Peter Bosz’s side became the first Dutch team to score six or more goals in a single Champions League/European Cup match since Ajax’s 10-0 win over Omonia Nicosia in October 1979.

Indeed, the hosts were stellar in the final third, significantly outperforming their expected goals (xG) of 2.82. Napoli, meanwhile, could only manage 1.24 xG in response.
