Wales captain Aaron Ramsey has signed a one-year contract with Liga MX club Pumas UNAM after leaving Cardiff City.

The midfielder – who spent 11 years with Arsenal between 2008 and 2019, winning the FA Cup on three occasions – was a free agent after the expiration of his contract with Cardiff.

Ramsey rejoined his boyhood club in 2023 and became interim manager for the final three games of 2024-25 after the departure of Omer Riza, but he was unable to stave off relegation from the Championship.

Cardiff confirmed his departure in June, and rather than look to carve out a managerial career, Ramsey will play on in the Mexican top flight.

Upon sealing his move to Pumas, Ramsey said: “I’ve played with some players who understand the Mexican league and had conversations in the past with them. This league is very technical, great players have been produced, the national team is very good.

“I’m really excited by the challenge. I’ve experienced a lot of things in my career and that puts me in a good place going forward.

“I realise the expectation on this club and I’m here to play my part and help deliver the things we want to this season.”

Ramsey has not featured for his country since September 2024 but hopes to lead them to the 2026 World Cup, which is being held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Wales are currently second in their qualification group, a point behind North Macedonia, though Belgium – who are three points further back – have two games in hand.

Pumas have not been champions of Mexico since 2011 and finished 10th in the Clausara to end the 2024-25 campaign. They open their 2025-26 season against Santos Laguna on July 12.
