James Tavernier salvaged managerless Rangers a late 2-2 draw on Saturday, denying Dundee United a comeback victory at Ibrox.

Craig Sibbald’s first league goal in over a year looked set to claim the three points after substitute Kristijan Trapanovski had cancelled out Thelo Aasgaard’s opener, but it was not to be for United.

Rangers were all over United in the first half, and the hosts’ pressure eventually paid off in the 25th minute, with Aasgaard driving down the left before cutting inside after dancing past two defenders and curling an excellent strike into the top-right corner.

Aasgaard continued to prove a threat throughout, forcing a fine save from Kucherenko on the stroke of half-time, with Oliver Antman also testing the Ukrainian.

But Rangers were made to pay for their missed chances in the first half, with Trapanovski drilling a low shot past Jack Butland 66 minutes in.

Butland’s goal continued to come under fire, and he made a fine stretching stop to deny Zachary Sapsford, but United recycled it well to Sibbald, who bent a superb strike in from distance.

Rangers managed to find a late equaliser, with Tavernier firing home with a powerful strike from the edge of the box, though Butland made a fine save to deny Trapanovski and hold onto the point.

Data Debrief: Rangers’ struggles go on post-Martin

In their first match since Russell Martin’s sacking, Rangers impressed in a dominant first half in which they had 23 shots.

However, only five of those were on target, and they accumulated just 1.08 expected goals (xG) with those attempts, leaving the door open for United.

United’s comeback should, perhaps, have been expected. They have not lost on the road yet this season (W1 D3), scoring at least twice in each of those matches.
