Robertson calls on Liverpool to ´win a bit simpler´ after latest late show

Andy Robertson rued Liverpool’s inability to record a straightforward win despite maintaining their superb start to the season against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

Liverpool have four wins from four in the Premier League and on Wednesday enjoyed another victory in their European opener at Anfield, prevailing 3-2.

But all five of those victories have required late winners, with the Reds this time relying on captain Virgil van Dijk to power in a 92nd-minute header.

Arne Slot’s side had been far more impressive than in their previous matches, but a two-goal lead secured inside six minutes by Robertson and Mohamed Salah was not built upon.

Instead, as Liverpool missed chances to extend their lead, Marcos Llorente wiped it out. The Atletico midfielder, who scored twice at Anfield in an epic 2020 knockout tie, contributed another double.

So, although Van Dijk’s goal then made it a winning start, Robertson, who was close to joining Atletico this summer, acknowledged the rollercoaster nature of this season so far is not necessarily healthy.

“We need to get back to winning a bit simpler and easier,” the left-back told TNT Sports. “The assistant manager turned to me when Virgil put it in and said he’s getting too old for it, so I can’t imagine what the fans are like.

“It’s a great thing to have, being able to keep going until the end, [but] when you’re 2-0 up and playing so well in the first half, it should’ve been a more comfortable night.”

Liverpool have now given up two-goal leads to Bournemouth, 10-man Newcastle United and Atletico, although they have recovered to win all three matches.

They have scored six times from the 88th minute onwards this season, but Van Dijk summed up his side’s relief as he said Liverpool had “found a way again”.

He told TNT Sports: “I think we showed many times that we are capable of doing it. Today I was the lucky one with the winner, and we move on.”

Liverpool will hope they can make easier work of taking the three points in their next outing, though that does come against local rivals Everton at Anfield on Saturday.
