The Russian Football Union has announced that former USSR defender and assistant coach Gennady Logofet has died aged 69.

Logofet, who made 17 appearances for the former USSR between 1963 and 1970, died on Monday.

A defender by trade, Logofet represented his country in the 1968 European Championship, a tournament in which the Soviets bowed out in the semi-finals after losing a coin toss against hosts Italy, and the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.

He spent his entire 15-year career with hometown club Spartak Moscow. Logofet also had two separate spells as coach of the USSR Under-21s, as well as a stint as an assistant with the national team and Spartak.

Logofet only brought the curtain down on his coaching career three years ago when he parted company with FC Maccabi Moscow.
