Diego Simeone lauded Antoine Griezmann as Atletico Madrid’s “difference-maker”, as he insisted the forward has earned the right to decide his own future.

Griezmann has been heavily linked with a move away from Atletico in recent weeks.

Orlando City are said to have been close to striking an agreement for Griezmann to head to MLS.

However, Atletico’s sporting director Mateu Alemany insisted Griezmann will not be making a move during this season.

Griezmann came off the bench to play a key role for Atletico in their 3-2 win over Real Sociedad, supplying a wonderful, backheel assist for Nico Gonzalez to score the first of his two goals.

And Simeone was delighted with the Frenchman’s impact, saying: “Griezmann is the difference-maker, crucial for us, and I hope he continues to give us whatever he wants.”

Of the speculation over Griezmann’s future, Simeone added: “These things are better when the player speaks directly and explains or says what he really means.

“We’re excited and want the best for him as a family and as a person; I love him very much, and he’ll decide when he needs to comment on something.

“I think the most important thing is when Antoine can speak and say what he feels, and surely people will be happy.”

Griezmann created three chances to help Atletico finish with a 2.31 expected goals to La Real’s 0.41.

His assist brought up his 300th goal involvement for Atletico in all competitions, across his two spells with the club (210 goals, 90 assists).

Saturday’s LaLiga clash was something of a dress rehearsal for the Copa del Rey final, which takes place next month.

Alexander Sorloth was also on target against his former club.

The Norway striker has scored 11 goals in 17 appearances in all competitions in 2026.

Among players from the top five European leagues, only Harry Kane (15) has scored more.
