Diego Simeone claimed he attaches no importance to records after Atletico Madrid’s history-making scoring run.

Alexander Sorloth’s double propelled Atletico to a 2-0 win over Real Oviedo on Saturday, lifting them to third in LaLiga.

Atletico are the first team in LaLiga history to score first in each of their opening 14 matches in a single season.

They have found the net in every one of their opening 14 matches in a LaLiga campaign for the first time since 1978-79.

However, Simeone warned that records do not equate to titles.

“I don’t attach that much importance to it,” Simeone said as he turned his focus to Tuesday’s clash with Barcelona.

“I wish this would win you a title, but it won’t. It’s a compliment.

“Any further comments will depend on what we do against Barca.

“We won a match we had to win, and now comes a very tough one, a difficult one, against an opponent we know very well and who has enormous potential, even more so with the return of Pedri and Raphinha. We’ll face a very tough opponent.

“Football is always about the present, the next match, the moment you face whoever you face. It’s about the responsibility to do well.

“We need to improve, maintain consistency, which is the hardest thing in this tough competition with its ups and downs. The team is competing well.”

Simeone has now won 323 games in LaLiga, taking him joint-second, along with Miguel Munoz, for the most victories as a coach in Spain’s top tier, behind only Luis Aragones (344).

Sorloth proved the difference-maker against Oviedo, with the Norway international responsible for eight of Atletico’s 14 attempts.

“My opinion of Alex, whether he plays 15, 60, or 90 minutes, is extremely important because he has characteristics that we don’t have in any other player,” Simeone told DAZN.

“And he allows us to play a different style of football during the time he’s on the field.

“We need him like this; it’s what the team needs, and he’ll be happy because he’s ambitious and always looking to score goals.”
