The Emperor’s Cup final will be contested between FC Tokyo and Kyoto Sanga after they both won their semi-finals on Thursday.
FC Tokyo booked their passage through to the showpiece cup event in Japanese football with a 1-0 win over Cerezo Osaka.
Cerezo – who have won the tournament three times – were toppled by the second-division outfit thanks to Tatsuya Yazawa’s second-half goal.
It will be the first time FC Tokyo have ever played in the final.
In the other match, Kyoto Sanga claimed a thrilling 4-2 win after extra time against Yokohama F. Marinos.
Kazuma Watanabe put the losers in front after 42 minutes but Kuhei Kodo and Junior Dutra hit back for Kyoto.
Yuji Nakazawa bagged a dramatic equaliser five minutes into injury-time to force extra-time but goals to Yuya Kobo and Yoshiaki Komai in the additional 30 minutes sealed Kyoto’s progression.
Kyoto will face FC Tokyo in the final on New Year’s Day.
