Eredivisie side FC Twente have announced the appointment of Steve McClaren as their new head coach.

The former England boss has signed a two-and-a-half year deal with the Enschede side, where he was coach between 2008 and 2010, guiding them to their first ever Eredivisie title in 2009/10.

Twente sacked Co Adriaanse on Tuesday and McClaren’s name had been strongly linked to the vacant position.

The club confirmed the 50-year-old’s appointment on Thursday.

“McClaren will return to FC Twente in the position of coach/manager of technical affairs,” a statement on Twente’s website read.

“The club and McClaren have agreed on a contract for two and a half seasons.”

McClaren left Twente for Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg in May 2010, but was sacked halfway through the season.

He then joined Nottingham Forest at the start of the 2011/12 campaign, only to resign in October following a string of disappointing results.

Twente are third on the Eredivisie table with 33 points from 17 games, five points behind leaders AZ Alkmaar.
