Udogie out of action for Tottenham until January

Thomas Frank has confirmed that Tottenham will be without left-back Destiny Udogie until January ahead of their Champions League meeting with Slavia Prague.

Udogie suffered a hamstring injury in Spurs’ 2-2 draw with Newcastle United last Tuesday, forcing him to miss the win over Brentford last weekend, which ended a run of five games without a victory.

He has managed just 15 appearances in all competitions this term, amounting to just 730 minutes, with Djed Spence getting the nod ahead of him.

However, with Spurs struggling with injuries in other key areas of the pitch, it comes as a blow during a hectic December schedule, with Frank also confirming Brennan Johnson, who has scored four goals in all competitions this term, is a doubt.

“Destiny Udogie picked up a hamstring injury at the end of Newcastle game. He is out until January,” Frank said.

“Brennan Johnson is touch-and-go. There will be a bit of rotation to make sure everyone is full of energy and freshness.”

All four of the previous meetings between Tottenham and Slavia Prague came in the UEFA Cup between 2006 and 2008, with Spurs unbeaten across four matches (W3 D1).

Spurs are currently 16th in the Champions League table after five games played, with eight points, having lost 5-3 to reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain last time out.

However, they have not lost consecutive games in major European competition since March 2020 (three).

Slavia Prague are winless in their last 12 matches in major European competition (D5 L7), but Frank remains wary of the threat posed by their visitors.

“It’s always good to build momentum, to get more consistent performances,” he said.

“We will try to build on [the win over Brentford], we have a good opportunity against a Slavia Prague side who are very direct and physical, man-mark all over the pitch.

“That can particularly make it difficult for us. It is about us making sure we perform well, with forwardness and directness in attacking play.”
