Zaire-Emery: Best still to come from PSG after six-trophy year

Paris Saint-Germain’s Warren Zaire-Emery hopes there is more to come from Paris Saint-Germain in 2026 after they capped a stellar 2025 with a sixth trophy.

PSG beat Flamengo 2-1 in a penalty shoot-out after the champions of Europe and South America drew 1-1 across 120 hard-fought minutes in Qatar, with Matvey Safonov the hero.

The Russian, who was starting between the sticks in place of Lucas Chevalier, saved four of Flamengo’s five kicks in the shoot-out, with only Nicolas de la Cruz beating him.

Safonov has now saved 60% (6/10) of the 10 penalties he has faced in shoot-outs with PSG, having also stopped two against Lens in the Coupe de France.

His saves – to deny Saul, Pedro, Leo Pereira and Luiz Araujo – meant miscues from Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola were inconsequential as PSG added more silverware to their cabinet.

They are just the second top-tier European team to win six trophies in one calendar year, after Barcelona in 2009. In addition to the Intercontinental Cup, they have won the Trophee des Champions, Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup.

Zaire-Emery, who produced an impressive performance in an unfamiliar right-back role, told beIN Sports: “We had a very clear objective, we came here to win.

“The coach told us not to give up, to play as usual. We played a very good match, a very good final against a team that put in lots of intensity.

“We hope to continue like this until the end of the season.

“This team has a lot of character; we are a collective. When the coach arrived here, this is what he wanted. He passed that on to us, it is the team above all else.

“I’m happy with my performance, but we have to continue like this. There is a huge margin for improvement.

“We’ll have to continue like this because it’s only the beginning of the season, the biggest part is coming.”

PSG’s final game of the year sees them face Vendee Fontenay Foot in the round of 64 of the Coupe de France on Saturday, after which they can enjoy a two-week break.
