Charlton Athletic have secured promotion to the Championship after beating Carlisle 1-0 at Brunton Park on Saturday.

Bradley Wright-Phillips scored the only goal of the game, and his 22nd of the season, to secure the Addicks return to the second tier after relegation to League One in 2009.

Sheffield Wednesday’s draw at Colchester meant Chris Powell’s side were able to secure their place in the guaranteed promotion places.

With three games remaining this season, Charlton will seal the league title if they can pick up a win and a draw from those fixtures.

Meanwhile, Doncaster Rovers were relegated to League One after a thrilling 4-3 defeat at home to Portsmouth.

Pompey faced the drop themselves with a defeat, and were losing 3-2 going into the game’s closing stages, but late goals from Dave Kitson and Markos Futacs means that Michael Appleton’s side will live to fight another day.
