Perth Glory are closing in on an A-League home final after a polished 2-0 win over Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium on Thursday.

First-half goals from striker Billy Mehmet and former Socceroos midfielder Jacob Burns were enough to give Ian Ferguson’s side a vital three points.

Mehmet opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a contentious strike, appearing to be in an offside position as he tapped in a Travis Dodd cross.

Industrious midfielder Burns rifled in a 20-yard half-volley on 24 minutes to ensure the Western Australian side moved into third, ahead of the Wellington Phoenix’s clash with Gold Coast United on Sunday.

Adelaide substitute Fabian Barbiero was shown his marching order five minutes from time for an off-the-ball incident with Perth left-back Dean Heffernan, ending a horror night for the Reds.

The loss has all but buried Adelaide’s flickering chances of a finals spot, sitting in ninth and still eight points adrift of the sixth-placed Newcastle Jets.
