This Premier League season is turning out to be one of the most unpredictable to date with the battle for the title, the fourth Champions League place and relegation all keeping spread bettors on the edge of their seats.

The Sporting Index traders currently have Chelsea as 49-52pt spread favourites on the outright championship index (60pts to the winner, 40pts to runner-up, 30pts to third-place, 20pts for fourth etc.). Any spread punters to have bought Chelsea’s spread will have been delighted to see them take three points from Old Trafford last Saturday.

Sellers of Liverpool’s outright Championship spread will have been pleased with Birmingham’s point from the match at St Andrew’s which leaves Man City fourth favourites in the win index with a spread of 14-15.5pts.

This weekend’s televised action kicks-off with Manchester United making the short trip to Ewood Park. Buyers of Blackburn Rovers’ win index will have noted that the side are unbeaten in seven home league games and have won five of their previous six home league fixtures. Those that have bought Rovers’ win index will take further confidence that the team have only conceded three goals in those six matches. However, buyers of United’s win index will know the side hold an impressive record over their Lancashire opponents with Sir Alex Ferguson’s team winning the last four meetings in all competitions against Blackburn.

Sellers will point out that Rovers took a point against United in the 2008 game, and punters that bought Blackburn’s win index would have been disappointed but buyers of the time of the last goal were chuffed to see Carlos Tevez equalise in the 88th minute. The last time Rovers beat United when total goal buyers and goal minutes buyers were jumping for joy as David Bentley grabbed a hat-trick in a 4-3 victory. The total goal minutes spread made up 345.

Liverpool return to Anfield this weekend to face Roy Hodgson’s Fulham. Supremacy spread buyers will be aware of Fulham’s poor away record this season which has seen them pick up only one away victory all season. While the Reds have also struggled on the road, they’ve lost just twice at home, winning 12 of their 16 games. The Cottagers’ 3-1 victory earlier in the campaign featured two red cards for Philipp Degen and Jamie Carragher, but bookings spread buyers may have been slightly disappointed in the resulting bookings index total of 60pts.

Sporting Index’s winning goal spread (a prediction on when the winning goal will be scored in the match) will spark debate amongst spread bettors, seeing as the corresponding fixture in December featured a 73rd minute winner while, to the delight of spread buyers, last year’s meeting featured a 90th minute decider.

Sunday’s late kick-off offers Manchester City a chance to tighten their grip on fourth place and give their outright championship buyers more assurance. Roberto Mancini’s side take on Birmingham, a side they’ve beaten on the last three occasions at home in the league. Punters who enjoy a spread bet on the bookings market will have fond memories of the meeting this season in Birmingham. Barry Ferguson received a late red card and the bookings index spread totalled 65.
