Mainz have parted company with head coach Bo Henriksen after Sunday’s crushing 4-0 defeat to Freiburg left them adrift at the bottom of the Bundesliga.
Mainz have taken just six points from their opening 12 games of the season, with their only league victory coming by a 4-1 scoreline at Augsburg in September.
Henriksen led Mainz to a sixth-place finish in the Bundesliga last campaign, securing Conference League qualification, and they sit fifth of 36 teams after four matchdays in Europe’s third-tier competition.
But Mainz’s domestic struggles have forced them to make a change in the dugout, with under-23 coach Benjamin Hofmann taking charge on an interim basis until a permanent successor is appointed.
Thank you for everything, Bo!
Bo Henriksen is no longer the head coach of 1. FSV Mainz 05. The club’s sporting management and the Danish coach agreed on Wednesday to end their collaboration with immediate effect.

Henriksen said in a statement: “Mainz 05 is a wonderful club with wonderful people and wonderful fans. We achieved so much together, and I am truly grateful for all the experiences and for our time together.
“Thank you for the incredible support! Unfortunately, we couldn’t play the same successful football this season, even though we fought for it right to the end. That’s football sometimes.”
