Campeonato Paulista wrap: Santos claim Corinthians scalp

Santos trimmed Corinthians’ lead at the top of the Campeonato Paulista to two points on Sunday with a 1-0 win over the league leaders.

Muricy Ramalho’s side entered the clash five points behind Corinthians in third place, but a neat finish from Ibson 12 minutes into the second-half – after a splendid through-ball from Ganso – was enough to secure victory for the home side and move them into second.

The result sees Corinthians still on top of the table on 29 points, but Santos are now just two points off the pace while Palmeiras are a point further back in third after their 0-0 draw with Sao Caetano.

In other results on Sunday, Sao Paulo climbed to fourth spot courtesy of their 1-0 win over XV de Piracicaba, with Cicero scoring the winner in the 89th minute.

Mogi Mirim are fifth after they came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Mirassol away from home.

Luciano Sorriso and Xuxa fired Mirassol to a 2-0 lead after 18 minutes, but Hernane pulled one back for Mogi in the 27th minute, and Felipe’s goal in first-half stoppage time secured a hard-earned point for the visitors.

Paulista had goals from Welton and Junior Alves to thank for their 2-1 win over Guaratingueta, while an Enrico goal on the half-hour mark powered Ponte Preta to a 1-0 home win over Comercial.

And an Edson Reis brace fired Botafogo to a 3-2 away win over Oeste.
