Third-division Mirandes stunned top flight Espanyol 2-1 in the Copa del Rey on Tuesday to advance to the semi-finals.

Mirandes came from a goal down to snatch the shock second-leg victory at the club’s tiny stadium in Miranda de Ebro and go through on away goals after Espanyol won the home tie 3-2 in Barcelona.

Espanyol looked to have settled the tie when Rui Fonte made it 1-0 shortly before half time but Mirandes captain Pablo Infante pulled one back with just over half an hour to go to make it 1-1.

Mirandes then belied their status and peppered Espanyol’s goal before Cesar scored the decisive goal two minutes into extra time to send the club’s fans into ecstasy in northern Spain.

The 4-4 aggregate result sets up a semi-final with either Athletic Bilbao or Real Mallorca.

Bilbao are in the box seat in that tie having won their home leg with Real Mallorca 2-0 with the return leg at ONO Estadi on Wednesday.

In the other quarter-finals, holders Real Madrid must overturn a 2-1 deficit when they play La Liga champions Barcelona at Camp Nou on Wednesday if they are to face Valencia, who are most likely to advance to the other semi.

Valencia look odds on to go through having defeated Levante 4-1 in the first leg at the Mestalla.
