Copa Libertadores: Palmeiras 1 Tijuana 2

Mexican club Tijuana booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Copa Libertadores on Tuesday with a 2-1 away win over Brazil’s Palmeiras.

After a goalless draw on home soil a fortnight ago, Tijuana came out on the offensive at Palmeiras’ Estadio Municipal Paulo Machado de Carvalho.

The visitors took the lead just before the half-hour mark through a Duvier Riascos strike, and they looked to have sealed their progression when Fernando Arce netted six minutes into the second half.

But Palmeiras would not stop coming, and they pulled a goal back on 62 minutes when substitute Souza converted from the penalty spot.

The match was a spiteful affair, with 12 yellow cards shown in total by referee Juan Soto.

Two of those went to Tijuana’s Pablo Aguilar, and the match took another turn in the 84th minute when the defender was given his marching orders.

The numerical advantage prompted a final flurry from Palmeiras, but they could not break down Tijuana, who sealed their place in the last eight with a 2-1 aggregate win.
