Ten-man Dortmund overcame Fortuna Dusseldorf 5-4 on penalties to join Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal.

Visitors Dortmund held on in a dramatic penalty shootout after regulation and extra-time ended 0-0, having played much of the match a man down when Patrick Owomoyela was sent off in the 34th minute for a second yellow card.

With a fired-up Roman Weidenfeller in fine form in the visitor’s goal, hosts Dusseldorf could not find a breakthrough in 120 minutes of play.

In the shootout, the Dortmund goalkeeper picked up a yellow for remonstrating with the referee after Andreas Lambertz was allowed to re-take his missed penalty.

It mattered little in the end as Weidenfeller composed himself to have the last laugh, saving from Thomas Broker to send his side through to the next round.

Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich overturned an early deficit to earn a 2-1 win away at Bochum.

Giovanni Federico stunned the visitors as he fired the 2.Bundesliga side into the lead on 26 minutes, before a lacklustre Bayern – boasting the likes of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery – equalised in the 52nd minute through Toni Kroos.

With extra-time looming and just seconds remaining, Robben stepped up to slot home from the penalty spot.

Hoffenheim edged out Augsburg 2-1, with Vedad Ibisevic’s 49th-minute strike separating the sides. Sejad Salihovic had opened the scoring before Torsten Oehrl leveled the scores for Bundesliga strugglers Augsburg.

Greuther Furth upset Nuremberg 1-0, with Edgar Prib’s 15th-minute strike propelling the 2.Bundesliga side into the next round.
