Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke believes more players from his club should have featured for Germany against France.

Thanks to injuries to Mario Gotze and Sven Bender, only Marcel Schmelzer and Mats Hummels were called up from Dortmund’s squad, with the former staying on the bench in the 2-1 loss on Wednesday.

“I’ve wondered why only one player from the German champions has played,” Watzke said on German television show Audi Star Talk.

“I thought about it and it annoyed me. This has nothing to do with Dennis Aogo (who played instead of Schmelzer). In any case, with his defensive strength, Schmelzer could have done well for Germany.”

“Even Kevin Grosskreutz was not called up to the squad, I don’t understand.”

However, Watzke feels that Germany coach Joachim Loew is doing a ‘class job’ for the national team.
