Gomes among the best – Redknapp

(GSM) – Harry Redknapp says he has always had faith with Huerelho Gomes, claiming that the Brazilian goalkeeper is among the best in the world. Gomes has been in fantastic form as of late and has managed to silence his critics and prove his true ability

Gomes had initially struggled to adapt to English football following his 2008 move from PSV Eindhoven. However, Gomes has managed to win himself some praise with a string of excellent performances for Spurs, a fact that delights Redknapp.

“He’s up there with the very best,” said Redknapp.

“When he came here Tony Adams, who had worked in Holland, said they’d signed the best goalkeeper in the world.

“I watch Dutch football on TV and it’s a completely different game and it took him time to adjust.

“He’s had a couple of dicky moments but ever since then he has got better and better and some of the saves on Wednesday (against Arsenal), particularly a couple from Robin van Persie and from Sol Campbell were vital saves.”

Redknapp says he had always believed in Gomes’ abilities. The English manager also revealed that he consulted former PSV manager Guus Hiddink over the signing of the Brazilian and Hiddink gave him the nod.

“I always knew he had the ability. I spoke to Guus Hiddink and he said he nearly took them (PSV) to a Champions League final in 2005, he’s that good.”
