Baylor University’s Robert Griffin III has been awarded the Heisman Trophy after being voted the best-performed college footballer.

The aspiring NFL quarterback beat likely number one draft pick Andrew Luck to the award, as he polled 405 first-place votes to Luck’s 247.

Griffin’s numbers on the field were undeniable, too, completing 72 percent of his passes for 3998 yards as he led the Bears to a 9-3 win-loss record in the Big 12 season – the first time they earned nine wins in one campaign in 25 years.

“This is unbelievably believable,” he said. “It’s unbelievable because in the moment we’re all amazed when great things happen. But it’s believable because great things don’t happen without hard work.”

Stanford University quarterback Luck is still expected to be picked first in the 2012 NFL draft, after finishing runner-up in the illustrious award for the second year running.

Alabama running back Trent Richardson came third with 138 first-place votes, followed by Wisconsin running back Montee Ball and LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu.
