According to The Times, Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi has emerged as a leading defensive target for Manchester City at the end of the season, when his contract expires.
The 25-year-old is certain to leave Selhurst Park next summer – he has already informed Crystal Palace that he would not be signing a new contract. He was close to joining Liverpool on Deadline Day this summer and while the Merseysiders’ interest remains, he has also been linked with the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
As for City, their need for new, reliable defenders is quite obvious. John Stones will be out of contract. Nathan Ake hasn’t been playing much and Manuel Akanji is on loan at Inter Milan, and both of them are expected to leave as well. Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol are currently the only reliable options in the heart of defence for Pep Guardiola, while Abdukodir Khusanov still isn’t deemed ready for a regular starting spot in the team.
Signing Guehi surely makes sense for City, though it remains to be seen if they can beat off the competition for his services. Palace could try to sell the England international in January to get some money for him, rather than lose him for free in the summer.
