Arsenal are investigating reports that Newcastle United midfielder Cheikh Tiote was racially abused in Monday’s match.

The Gunners emerged victorious at the Emirates Stadium as Thomas Vermaelen’s late goal sealed a 2-1 win in the Premier League clash.

The club confirmed that Sky Sports cameras picked up a member of the crowd pointing at the Ivorian and mouthing something which was “highly inappropriate”.

An Arsenal representative said: “The club take a zero-tolerance (approach) towards events of this nature and will be investigating the incident.”

The images were seen after midfielder Tomas Rosicky missed a chance in the 68th minute of the Gunners’ triumph.
