QPR have announced that veteran forward Heidar Helguson has signed a contract extension that ties him to the club until the summer of 2013.

The Icelandic striker has impressed in the Premier League so far this season, bagging seven goals in 12 games for the newly promoted outfit, and manager Neil Warnock is delighted to have secured the 34-year-old’s future.

“I fought tooth and nail to keep Heidar here over the summer, because I knew he could be a threat for us in the Premier League,” Warnock told the club’s official website.

“He’s proved time and again what a good player he is.”

“He’s more than earned this new deal – no-one deserves it more. He’s a credit to his profession and it couldn’t happen to a nicer lad.”

Warnock did confirm that QPR are on the lookout for reinforcements up front in the knowledge that, at 34, Helguson will not be able to lead the line in every match.

“We know he’s not going to play every game at his age, which is why we need to add to our options in that department,” he said.

“It’s something we’re working on and we’re quite hopeful we’ll be successful in our pursuit.”

The 63-year-old also stated that he is hoping to agree extended deals with other members of the current playing staff in the coming weeks.

“With a little bit of luck, hopefully we can get one or two more of the lads that are here to sign new contracts over the next few weeks,” he said.

QPR will play their final match of the calendar year away against Arsenal on December 31.
