Ederson says he was not happy at Manchester City and needed the change of moving to Fenerbahce on deadline day.

The Brazilian left City after eight years in September, joining the Turkish Super Lig team in a deal reportedly worth £12.1m.

Ederson made 372 appearances for City in all competitions, winning 18 major trophies, including six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

He clinched the Premier League Golden Glove in three consecutive seasons between 2019-22 and left the English top-flight with the most assists by a goalkeeper in the competition’s history (seven).

However, Ederson was regularly linked with a move away from the Etihad in his last two seasons in Manchester, and he revealed he had already attempted to leave before getting his transfer this year.

“In the season before that, I had already tried to leave, but it didn’t work out,” Ederson said at a press conference while with Brazil.

“I think that influenced my performance during the season a little. I had five injuries and wasn’t at my best.

“That affected me a little. It was a decision I had already made with my family to talk to the club about leaving if they agreed.

“I needed this change. There’s no point in being at a giant, successful club if you’re not happy.”

Ederson has made 10 appearances in all competitions since joining Fenerbahce, keeping five clean sheets in that time.

They sit second in the Turkish top-flight, just one point behind rivals Galatasaray, and Ederson is relishing the new challenge.

“It would have continued to affect me in the same way,” he added. “It’s good to have new challenges in your life, in your career.

“With this change, I’m breathing football again, feeling the atmosphere at the games in Turkey, which is crazy. I’m very happy with this new challenge, eager to win.”
