Ipswich boss Keane considers Campbell signing

Ipswich manager Roy Keane revealed Friday that he would be interested in signing former England international Sol Campbell after the defender quit League Two club Notts County after just one game.

The former Tottenham and Arsenal centre-back is not expected to be allowed to sign for another club until the transfer window reopens in January.

But Keane is keen to bolster his squad after a poor start to the season and he believes a deal could be done to bring the 35-year-old to the Championship club.

“It depends on his contract situation,” Keane said in the Irish Independent.

“If his contract is terminated then I don’t think he can play for anyone else (until) January. But we are interested in players who are available and who can come in and strengthen our squad.

“But that’s a big if. It would be a long shot, no doubt.”

Keane continued: “We’re interested in any player who is available and would be interested in coming to Ipswich.

“I’m sure Sol, if he can play because I don’t know the situation with his contract, will have plenty of options because he is a good player. We’ll see.

“I had a similar situation when I left (Manchester) United. I had my contract and couldn’t play for someone else until January although I was told something different and that’s a different story.

“I think Sol has had a lot of criticism over the last few days but I admire people who make a decision.”
