Jack Charlton, manager of Ireland at three international tournaments, is recovering in hospital after breaking his hip.
The Leeds United legend and England World Cup-winning centre-half fell at his home in Morpeth, Northumberland.
Charlton, 76, fell down the stairs and managed to phone for help before being transported to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Newcastle.
His son, John, told the Daily Mail: “The stairs in his house are a bit tricky and awkward and he basically fell down them.”
“It could have been a lot worse because my mum was out of the house and he was on his own.”
“Because of his age they want to operate on him, give him a new hip. We’ve all been worrying but he’s going to be fine.”
“The doctors say he’ll be back on his feet within 24 hours of the operation and should be home next week.”
“He’s in good spirits considering what happened. He’s sitting up in bed cracking jokes with the nurses.”
