Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson said victory over Liverpool on Sunday can underline his side’s Premier League credentials.

The north London club have been held to two disappointing goalless draws in their opening fixtures, at home against Sunderland and away to Stoke.

And the 20-year-old insisted a win at Anfield can consign those results to the past, given the Reds’ status as ‘a big club’.

“It would be a huge statement of intent to win there,” he told the club’s official website.

“Liverpool are a big club but we are just focused on our own game, and hopefully we will execute as we need to and get the three points.”

The former Charlton right-back also expressed his admiration for the Anfield crowd, describing the ground as a ‘special place’ to play football.

“Anfield is always a great place to play football, we’re all looking forward to it and we’re going for the three points,” he said.

“I was only on the bench last year, but the atmosphere and the stadium itself make it a special place. Liverpool are an ambitious club, and I am sure they will not sit back at Anfield looking to take a point.

“Hopefully it will be an open game and maybe that will be of benefit to us because it will open things up a bit.”

The Gunners go into the game having not tasted defeat at Anfield in four years.
