Russian Premier League club Anzhi Makhachkala have announced Yuri Krasnozhan as their new coach.

The ambitious Russian outfit had been on the lookout for a new coach since September, when Roberto Carlos was given the role of caretaker following the sacking of Gadzhi Gadzhiyev.

Krasnozhan returns to club coaching after a quick tenure in charge of Russia’s B team.

“I’m very grateful to the Anzhi bosses for entrusting me with these huge responsibilities,” said Krasnozhan.

“Anzhi have become one of the more popular clubs in recent times, followed not only in Russia but also round the world.”

The 48-year-old was axed by Lokomotiv Moscow in June due to what the club described as ‘negligence’, after it was suspected that he had helped fix his side’s league defeat against Anzhi.

Guus Hiddink had been tipped as Anzhi’s priority to take charge of the team, but the Dutchman’s agent denied last week that the Russian club had approached his client.

Anzhi finished eighth in the league during the competition’s first phase, which allowed them to reach the Championship group, in which they defeated CSKA Moscow 2-1 in their first match.
