Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy believes the appointment of manager Nigel Adkins has given the club a boost.

Adkins was brought in to replace Brian McDermott and while he only recorded his first victory last Saturday at Fulham, McCarthy says the former Southampton boss has brought something different to the players and fans.
“You can see by the way we are playing now – the style the new manager has brought in gives the fans more enjoyment from their perspective,” McCarthy, whose impressive form has seen him linked with a summer move to Liverpool.
While Reading’s relegation was confirmed prior to their 4-2 win at Craven Cottage, McCarthy believes there have already been positives that can be taken into the last two games.
“The way we’re playing and the style we’re playing gives us more opportunities all over the pitch and I think on Saturday the result reflected the way we played,” he told the club’s official website.
“I thought we were top drawer and fully deserved the three points.”
Reading welcome Manchester City on Tuesday before travelling to West Ham on the final day and McCarthy is positive his team-mates can take points off both.
“They are massive games, and City have great players,” he said.
“With the way we played on Saturday and the confidence we can take from it, I think it will be a massive game for us on Tuesday and I think we’ll do well.”
