Moyes coy on Bale interest

David Moyes has refused to rule out the possibility that Manchester United will bid for Tottenham forward Gareth Bale.

The Welshman’s future has been one of the biggest talking points of the transfer window, with a world-record move to La Liga giants Real Madrid thought to be close to completion.

But reports surfaced on Monday that Tottenham were considering offers from other clubs, with United thought to be among the teams chasing his signature.

And Moyes remained coy on the issue of a potential bid for the 24-year-old after United’s 0-0 Premier League draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford on Monday.

“I said when I got the job Manchester United will always be interested in the best players,” he told Sky Sports.

“We are always looking to try and improve the team.

“The owners have given me every opportunity to bring in whoever I want so we will continue to try and find those players. It’s been tough in this window but we’re always looking at the best players.”

Moyes will also be boosted by Jose Mourinho’s admission that Chelsea may not make a new bid for United striker Wayne Rooney.

The England international was one of the stand-out performers in Monday’s match, and he was met with a warm reception by United’s fans, despite his apparent desire to leave Old Trafford.

And Mourinho conceded it would be hard to tempt him away from a “special club”.

“He’s got one thing right, it is a special club,” Moyes added. “We’ve said from day one (Rooney is not for sale).”
