Newcastle United 2-3 Brentford: Ouattara shines on landmark Premier League appearance

Brentford surged back into the top seven of the Premier League as Dango Ouattara’s late winner saw them beat Newcastle United 3-2.

Bruno Guimaraes – on his return from injury – looked like he had clinched at least a point for the hosts at St. James’ Park when he converted a 79th-minute penalty.

Yet Ouattara, on his 100th Premier League appearance, had other ideas.

Ouattara had earlier marked his milestone game with a fantastic assist for Vitaly Janelt, who headed in to cancel out Sven Botman’s 24th-minute opener.

Brentford nosed themselves ahead on the cusp of half-time when Igor Thiago scored from the penalty spot following Jacob Murphy’s handball.

Guimaraes hauled Newcastle level when he slotted home from a penalty he won, but Ouattara had the last laugh with a drilled finish in the 85th minute, as Brentford moved level on points with sixth-place Liverpool.

Ouattara’s winner was the first time he’s scored in consecutive league games since September 2022, a run of four with Lorient in Ligue 1.

The former Bournemouth attacker was brilliant. No Brentford player created more chances than his two or completed more dribbles (also two).

Having lost seven of their first eight Premier League away games this season (W1), Brentford have now won four of their last five on the road (L1), as hopes of a European charge pick up steam.

While it was not exactly a smash-and-grab, Brentford did register fewer expected goals (xG) than Newcastle, with 1.93 to their hosts’ 2.25. But they took their chances when they came.
