Substitute Edin Dzeko rescued victory from the jaws of defeat for 10-man Manchester City in a 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Shane Long’s goal had given West Brom a 67th-minute lead and looked like propelling the home side to their fifth consecutive home English Premier League win following James Milner’s early sending-off.

But Dzeko had other ideas as he equalised a minute after coming on before sending City’s travelling fans wild with his second goal in additional time.

Either side of Dzeko’s last-minute winner, another substitute, Romelu Lukaku, had come close to scoring, but he was denied – first by Joe Hart and then by an Aleksandar Kolarov goal-line clearance.

This season’s surprises packets West Brom looked capable of causing an upset and their chances improved when Milner was sent off in the 23rd minute.

A mistake by Vincent Kompany allowed Long a clear run on Hart’s goal, and Milner mistimed his tackle to be sent off.

Long was hacked to the ground and replays showed that referee Mark Clattenburg was correct to show Milner a straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Few among the 24,891 spectators expected Mario Balotelli, who looked increasingly frustrated, to come back out after the break, but Mancini re-shaped his team into a 4-3-1-1 formation, moved Carlos Tevez back and gave the Italian striker the spearhead role in which he is far more comfortable.

It paid immediate dividends as City began to gain a foothold in the match, creating opportunities and quietening the home fans for the first time.

Tevez’s long-range shot was heading for the top corner before it was athletically pawed away by Ben Foster while Yaya Toure headed over the bar.

Against the run of play, West Brom took the lead after 67 minutes.

Substitute Peter Odemwingie made an immediate impact, putting Long through on goal and the number nine tapped in his third league goal of the season.

Mancini hauled off Gareth Barry and sent on Dzeko to rescue a point and the Bosnian managed to do even better with his two late strikes.

Dzeko headed in an 80th-minute equaliser from a Tevez free-kick following an error from Foster before his winner, which came on the counter-attack.

City broke with speed and it led to Sergio Aguero cutting back for Dzeko to finish with a neat right-footed strike into the bottom corner.
