Rodgers aims to strengthen squad

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is still keen to bring in new players as the transfer deadline looms.

As well as allowing Andy Carroll to move to West Ham on a season-long loan deal, both Charlie Adam and Jay Spearing have been linked with moves away, which should free up funds at the club.

A host of names including Clint Dempsey, Daniel Sturridge and Theo Walcott have been tipped for a move to Anfield and Rodgers suggested that incomings are now likely.

“We need other players to come in and help the group,” Rodgers told reporters.

“We hope over the next 24 hours that can happen.”

When pressed whether this included the 29-year-old Fulham forward Dempsey, Rodgers refused to divulge any information, after expressing an interest in the player earlier this summer.

“We have been linked with loads.

“I will get an update later from Ian Ayre, our managing director, who has worked tirelessly over the course of this window to manage deals, in and out.”

After scraping into the group stages of the Europa League courtesy of a 1-1 draw at Anfield against Hearts, it appears that Carroll’s move to Sam Allardyce’s side should free up room in the budget for further arrivals on deadline-day.
