Only Thierry Henry is ahead of Mohamed Salah among the greatest overseas players to play in the Premier League, so says former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.

Liverpool announced on Tuesday that Salah would be leaving the club at the end of the 2025-26 season, bringing an end to his glittering nine-year stint on Merseyside.

The 33-year-old arrived at Anfield in 2017 in a reported £36.5m switch from Roma and has gone on to win eight major honours, which includes two Premier League titles.

Salah has 189 goals and 92 assists in 310 Premier League outings for Liverpool, the most goals and assists combined any player has for a single club in Premier League history.

He has also scooped two Premier League Player of the Year awards, the latest of which came in 2024-25 after a stunning individual season led Liverpool to a 20th top-flight title.

The Egyptian’s 284 goal contributions overall in the English top-flight is a total only bettered by Wayne Rooney (311) and Alan Shearer (324), something Carragher believes puts him ahead of Ronaldo in terms of the legacy they have left in the competition.

“In the pantheon of overseas attacking players to have excelled in England, only Thierry Henry eclipses Salah’s output and consistency,” Carragher wrote for The Telegraph.

“While many will argue about the merits of players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Eden Hazard, Gianfranco Zola, Dennis Bergkamp or Eric Cantona, none of them produced the same devastating numbers as consistently, season-after-season, as the Egyptian.

“Ronaldo’s time at Manchester United, both initially and upon his return, was either side of his absolute, Real Madrid-peak years.

“Salah edges ahead of him when judging strictly on Premier League performance and impact.

“In an all-time Premier League XI, Salah is an automatic inclusion in the front three alongside Henry and Ronaldo.”

Ronaldo made 236 Premier League appearances during two stints for Manchester United, netting 103 times as well as providing 37 assists.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also lifted three consecutive top-flight titles, as well as winning the Premier League Player of the Year award twice, the joint-most alongside Salah, Henry, Kevin de Bruyne and former team-mate Nemanja Vidic.

Henry, like Salah, also won two Premier League titles, while registering 249 goal contributions (175 goals, 74 assists) in 258 top-flight outings.
