A late Johnny Russell header has secured Dundee United a thrilling 1-0 victory over Motherwell in the Scottish Premier League on Wednesday.

Scores were locked at 0-0 deep into the second half and the match appeared destined to end as a scoreless draw.

But in the 84th minute, Russell rose to meet a Keith Watson cross from the right channel and headed the ball into the top right corner of the net from 12 yards out to decide the contest.

The result saw Dundee United move from third-bottom to seventh on the table with a game in hand and within striking distance of the European spots.

Conversely, Motherwell missed a chance to go to third by failing to secure all three points.

Next up for Dundee United in the league is a match-up away to second-placed Hibernian at Easter Road Stadium on Sunday while Motherwell host bottom-of-the-table Dundee at Fir Park Stadium on Saturday.
