QPR defender Danny Simpson wants controversial midfielder Joey Barton to stay at the club due to his quality.

Barton has played in both of QPR’s fixtures this season, a 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship and a 2-0 League Cup success against Exeter City.

But his future at the club remains in doubt with the 30-year-old still keen on a permanent transfer to Ligue 1 outfit Marseille, where he spent last campaign on loan.

He earned a standing ovation from the Loftus Road faithful for his performance against Wednesday and Simpson, who also played with Barton at Newcastle United, believes the club would benefit if he were to stay.

“It would be massive if Joey could stay,” Simpson told West London Sport.

“Everyone knows what his qualities are. I hope he stays, for me and the team, because he’s a great asset.

“Joey and I have played together numerous times. We know what it’s like to play together. We know what each other’s going to do. He’s such a quality player.”
