Ex-Inter goalkeeper Francesco Toldo has leapt to the defence of Julio Cesar, saying the criticism surrounding the 32-year-old is excessive.

Brazil international and Inter custodian Cesar has come under fire for regular fitness problems, which have seen him miss several matches for the club in recent months.

Cesar sat out the Derby d’Italia against Juventus last weekend with a thigh injury and it is still unknown when he will return.

Toldo, who played for Inter from 2001 to 2010, praised the Brazilian and stressed he still has a lot to give to the club.

“The criticism is certainly excessive,” Toldo said. “I believe Julio is still a great goalkeeper who can be relied upon for a long time.”

“Right now he is just struggling with some fitness problems.”
