Italian FA president Damiano Tommasi said the association is aiming to purchase government bonds in the nation’s dire financial state.
In light of the global economic crisis, Italy is one of a number of European nations in an unstable situation, and the government have asked for different bodies to help financially.
The former Roma midfielder Tommasi has pledged his support to the project, and has urged Serie A clubs to follow suit.
“Some of us are called up to wear the colours of the Azzurri and play for Italy,” the 37-year-old told ANSA.
“However, all of us cheer for the country and most of all we believe in its strength; that’s why we’re supporting BTP Day (Government Bond Day) on Monday.”
“We, as an association, will purchase government bonds, and I sent a letter to the captains of all the professional clubs to invite their colleagues to do the same.”
“I’ve already received positive signs from many of them regarding this.”
