´We´re not happy´ – Hjulmand keen to find consistency in Leverkusen´s attack

Kasper Hjulmand was “not happy” with Bayer Leverkusen’s consistency in the final third as they saw their winning streak ended by Borussia Monchengladbach.

Leverkusen had won their previous four matches in all competitions heading into Saturday’s contest with Gladbach, but they were held to a 1-1 draw, with Philipp Sander’s own goal cancelling out Yannik Engelhardt’s opener.

It was a draw that saw the Werkself miss the chance to close the gap to the top four after Stuttgart had fallen to a shock 2-1 loss to struggling St. Pauli.

Leverkusen managed 10 shots worth 0.8 expected goals (xG) but managed to get onto two of those on target, compared to Gladbach, who saw six of their nine attempts hit the target.

And Hjulmand, while impressed with the hosts’ approach to the game, was frustrated that his side could not provide a bigger goal threat.

“Of course, we didn’t show enough intensity in the first half, and we lacked pace, especially in possession,” Hjulmand said.

“That, combined with Gladbach’s good positioning and possession play, made it difficult for us to find our shape.

“That’s why we made some changes for the second half and played 4-3-3 for the first time with me as coach. The intensity was then much higher, much better.

“The only thing missing was a finish and consistency in the final third. Hats off to Gladbach for a good performance, but it wasn’t good enough for us. We’re not happy.”
