Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck wants to improve his goals tally after managing just two this season.

Welbeck broke into the United first team after a loan spell at Sunderland, scoring 12 goals in his debut season at Old Trafford, but he has struggled to reproduce that form this term.

The England international made 40 appearances in United’s title-winning campaign but only managed to find the back of the net twice, his last strike coming against Real Madrid in February’s UEFA Champions League clash.

The 22-year-old, who is a product of the club’s academy, admitted although he was pleased with his performances in helping United lift their 20th league title his goals record was disappointing.

“This season has been the most number of matches I have played and my performances have been a lot more consistent but the goals return has not been good at all,” he told MUTV.

“I do feel if I can get a better goals return I will be flying. I want to be up front and scoring goals.

“If I am playing on the wings I still want to score more goals but preferably I will be up front and scoring goals there.”

Welbeck has scored more goals for England over the season than for United, scoring three in two appearances towards the end of 2012.
