Wigan duo disappointed with draw

Gary Caldwell and Victor Moses both rued missed chances after a dominant Wigan had to settle for a point after their 1-1 draw with Norwich.

Norwich took control of the opening stages of the game at home and were rewarded with a goal from Wesley Hoolahan, only for Moses to draw his side level midway through the second half.

But the Wigan duo claimed their poor start cost them an invaluable three points as their presence in the game grew throughout.

“We dominated the second half, the first half we got punished for a sloppy 20 minutes and conceding a goal. Then we did everything in the second half but score the second goal, but we can take the positives from the second half and build on that,” Caldwell told Sky Sports.

“It was a sloppy start and we have to look at ourselves for that. We didn’t start at all and we let Norwich into the game by giving them a goal start and it’s difficult when you do that with good teams.”

“Fair play to us, we came out in the second half and had a go at them creating numerous chances but we couldn’t get the second goal or the three points in the end.”

“We can (take heart from this game), we know on our day when we work well as a team we are not bad. I think in the second half we showed that today.”

“It’s small periods in games when we let ourselves down and give ourselves a mountain to climb.”

“We just couldn’t do it today but we still have great belief.”

Moses echoed the sentiments of his team-mate, claiming it was unfortunate Wigan could not build on his second-half equaliser despite creating a host of chances.

“I think we deserved the three points today, obviously we had a lot of chances but there was stuff we didn’t do particularly well. But we came out for the second half and (coach Roberto Martinez) told us what we had to do to get the three points,” Moses added.

“In the second half we were all over them, no disrespect to them because they are a great side, but we came here to get all three points.”

“We’ve got a lot of games to go, we need to get together as a team and take each game as it comes. It is the right time to start picking up three points.”

With relegation looking likely for Martinez’s men, Caldwell spoke of his belief that the spirit in the squad can see them pull through a tough relegation battle.

“I think we showed today we are together as a unit. The boys who came off of the bench today made a real difference to the team and that can only be good for us for the remaining games of the season,” he said.
