(GSM) – Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins has left the club after the club refused to renew his contract.

“On behalf of everyone at the club I would like to thank Ray for everything he has done for Chelsea Football Club. We all wish him well for the future,” Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay said.

Wilkins, 54, made 179 appearances with Chelsea before joining Manchester United in 1979. He was appointed as assistant manager at Chelsea when Luiz Felipe Scolari was manager.

Wilkins, who is a fluent Italian speaker, has helped Ancelotti communicate with his players since the Italian arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer.

No reason was revealed as to why Chelsea did not offer the Englishman a new contract.
