(GSM) – Shaun Wright-Phillips is keen on making England’s World Cup squad this summer. The 28-year-old winger is eager to avoid another disappointment after missing out on Sven Goran Eriksson’s 23-man squad in World Cup 2006.

The Manchester City’s winger’s father Ian Wright was ruled out of France ’98 with a hamstring injury. Wright-Phillips is hoping to avoid having the same fate as his father.

“Obviously it was a massive disappointment to miss out in 2006, but if there is lots of competition for places again this time that can only be good for the country – and that’s the most important thing,” said Wright-Phillips.

“You try not to get distracted by it, and it’s not my decision (to pick the squad), but time will tell whether I’ve done enough.

“We can’t change what happened to my dad in 1998. It just wasn’t meant to be. All I can do is give it my best shot, but I like to think I would not let England down.”
