Socceroos veteran Scott Chipperfield has joined amateur outfit FC Aesch in Switzerland.
The 36-year-old recently wrapped up a hugely successful 11-year career with FC Basel, in which he won seven titles and six Swiss cups.
Chipperfield signed a short-term contract with Tarrawanna in the Illawarra Premier League earlier this month as he prepared to return home to Australia.
The versatile Chipperfield – who has played for his country on 68 occasions – was widely expected to join an A-League club at the conclusion of his deal with Tarrawanna, tipped to be the newly formed Western Sydney Wanderers FC.
But he decided to stay in Switzerland for family reasons, announcing his intentions on Tuesday, before securing his future just a day later.
“Sign in 1hr boy :-). FC Aesch. Local team in Basel,” Chipperfield told fans of his on Twitter on Wednesday evening, before posting pictures of him holding up his new club’s shirt.
