Deportivo la Coruña made up for the 2-0 defeat by Norwegian side Brann Bergen, and beat their opponents on penalties to make it through to the UEFA Cup group phase.
Argentinian Diego Colotto, not particularly known for his scoring abilities, netted twice to level the aggregate score. The center-back was successful in the 18th and 76th minute.
The Spaniards had been playing with a man less than their opponents as Riki conceded two yellow cards within three minutes from each other, to be sent off on the half hour mark.
No goals were scored in extra time at Riazor, and Deportivo were the better side in the following penalty shoot-out: 3-2.

- Barnetta, von Bergen add to Swiss injury woes (SN)
- Anderlecht follow Rangers out of Europe
