PSV Eindhoven’s Eredivisie title bid took a hit when they lost 3-1 away to Feyenoord on Sunday, while Ajax beat Excelsior to move second.

Georginio Wijnaldum put hosts Feyenoord ahead in the 27th minute at De Kuip Stadion.

Already battling to get back into the match, PSV’s task was made harder with the sending off of central midfielder Orlando Engelaar eight minutes into the second half.

The 10-man visitors did manage to equalise on the hour mark through Swedish striker Ola Toivonen.

But it took just three minutes for right winger Wijnaldum to put Feyenoord back in front with his second of the match.

And striker Luc Castaignos added a third 11 minutes from time to guarantee victory for the hosts.

Feyenoord climb to 10th on the table, while PSV slip to third, two points behind Ajax and three back from league leaders Twente.

Ajax climbed above PSV into second after a 4-1 win at home to Excelsior.

Daan Bovenberg equalised for Excelsior nine minutes into the second half after Lorenzo Ebicilio had given Ajax an lead early at the Amsterdam Arena.

But three goals in the last 20 minutes from Danish youngster Christian Eriksen, a second to winger Ebicilio and an injury-time effort from Siem De Jong secured all three points for Ajax.

Defeat leaves Excelsior third from bottom and, six points off safety with only two matches remaining, seemingly heading for the relegation playoffs.

In other matches, a flurry of goals in the second half saw Utrecht win 4-2 at home to Vitesse Arnhem.

After a goalless opening 45 minutes at the New Galgenwaard Stadium, Michihiro Yasuda’s own-goal and a strike from Dries Mertens little more than 60 seconds apart gave hosts Utrecht a 2-0 lead.

Guram Kashia pulled one back for Vitesse just two minutes later, before Kevin Strootman made it 3-1 on the hour mark.

Frank Demouge added a fourth on 73 minutes, with Adnane Tighadouini’s 86th-minute goal merely a consolation for the visitors.

The defeat leaves Vitesse 14th, clear of the relegation zone on goal difference only, while Utrecht are eighth.
