Martinez: Lukaku ‘loves’ playing for Everton

Everton F.C. manager Roberto Martinez has insisted Romelu Lukaku 'loves' playing for the Toffees despite the player recently revealing he would like to play for a 'top club' in the future.

Everton F.C. manager Roberto Martinez has insisted Romelu Lukaku ‘loves’ playing for the Toffees despite the player recently revealing he would like to play for a ‘top club’ in the future.

The Belgium international, 21, left Chelsea for Everton in a £28 million deal in the summer, but has tallied just seven goals and two assists in 25 English Premier League appearances in 2014/15.

After the Toffees’ 1-0 defeat to Chelsea last week, Lukaku told The Sun: “It was brilliant to play at Chelsea and I had a good reception.

“They know I’m a good player but that I want to develop so I can eventually get back to playing for a club like Chelsea.

“I don’t have a secret ambition to rejoin — there are other clubs in the world. I just want to grow as a player and eventually arrive at a top club again.”

However, Martinez has moved to play down the stir following Lukaku’s hat-trick against BSC Young Boys in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night.

“It’s never an issue. Rom was delighted to commit himself to Everton,” said Martinez. “He loves playing for Everton, and I think he showed that today.

“A footballer needs to be measured by the way he talks on the pitch. Sometimes a microphone can be put in front of you and people then dissect everything you say and highlight a word or line which is not appropriate.

“There has been a lot written about that – there was a conversation taken a little bit out of context after the Chelsea game.

“It was clearly someone looking for a headline about if Rom wanted to perform in order to come back to Chelsea, and his answer probably didn’t reflect what he meant.”

Martinez added: “He’s a special footballer who we love seeing developing, and he’s just enjoying being an important player for Everton,” he said.

“He’s the complete striker, but he’s only 21 and people forget about that. Our desire and work we put in over the summer was to show we are the perfect place for him to develop.

“We saw today he really makes a difference in front of goal and he’s someone who is going to have a really strong ending to the season.”

In other news, Manchester United have reportedly completed the signing of Belgian teenager Indy Boonen on a three-year deal, according to reports in Belgium.

“It’s like in a dream,” Boonen told Belgian newspaper HLN. “The training sessions are hard, but I don’t feel the tiredness when I realise I have signed for Manchester United.”
